Art-Making Tip: How to Seal Gouache Painting with Cold Wax

I’ve had several students and Creative Practice Keepers members ask me to demo how I am using cold wax to seal my gouache paintings, so I finally made a short video to share.

It’s so easy - and I love the results!

I’ve been using gouache more and more in my mixed-media painting practice, but of course, it’s a water-based, water-soluble paint, so a protective finish comes into question. With a wax finish, you don’t have to necessarily put your paintings behind glass (which I personally prefer not to for aesthetic reasons). So it not only does it protect your gouache artwork, but it opens up more doorways for finished presentation.

Enjoy the demo - I hope it’s helpful!
