it was the kind of moon
that I would want to
send back to my ancestors
and gift to my descendants
so they know that I too,
have been bruised... by beauty.

― Sanober Khan

There is no question how powerful stories are in our lives.

They have the power to connect, validate, guide, deceive, mislead, clarify, inspire, strengthen, bind and set free… to name just a few possibilities.

They really do form and transform us.

I was raised with a spiritual perspective rooted in the value of making choices today with consideration for their impact on the Earth and our children’s children’s children tomorrow… and by “tomorrow,” what was meant was seven generations from now.

Choices that take into account the wisdom and traditions of our lineages and elders. While it doesn't seem to me that this value was being perfectly modeled by those who spoke of it in my life, just imagine our world if we all tried a little harder to shoot for this ideal in practical, decisive and creative ways together.

Imagine if this time-surpassing, generational-crossing way of living and considering one another was how we made meaning and showed acts of love and care.

Having come from a... complicated family and childhood, to say the least, I recognize deeply how we may be inclined to turn away from what has come before us, from family stories and belief systems - some true, some idealized fantasies, some with multiple variations, and some that are downright lies, false beliefs or narratives that keep us stuck in unhealthy patterns as individuals and families. I bet some of you can relate.

We are in a time of such relational awakening, aren't we? It is terrifying and liberating, it is healing and creative... and it is work, if we're honest.

And yet, in my own healing journey, I’ve come to appreciate the process of bravely, consciously considering and sifting the stories - instead of just blindly accepting them, turning away or denying my intuition and experience in the face of them.

We are each wonderfully made… and oh-so-far from perfect, as we learn and unlearn, and fumble, fall, get up and try again to make right and make new. We are children of Creator, ever in-process and inseparable. So are our ancestors and passed on loved ones - those we remember, and those we’ve forgotten (or would like to). So are our descendants and those yet to be born - those we have met, dreamed of and hope for (and those we will never meet).

In my own life-story, I have some particularly painful experiences, including with my biological grandmothers. There is absence, trauma, manipulation, abandonment and perversion of love.

You know… the messy, hard stuff of being human in a world of deeply hurt(ing) humans.

In a time when women are re-discovering and re-creating the gift of lifting one another up and cultivating deep bonds, the truth is, we may have some things to unpack from our experiences and relationships with women in our lives before we can show up to one another as our truest selves.

This has been a huge part of my own awakening and healing transformation over the last decade… and thanks to the first four decades of my life, and a lot of generational trauma.

But you see, I have also encountered the archetype of healthy Grandmother energy in the most beautiful, surprising places and people. My step-grandma and a few select elders that Creator has put on my path, for sure… but also within the realms of music and meals and worship, and in a few choice locations in nature that hold me and love me whenever I go there and let myself be held and loved. To name just a few. What about you?

The good work of it, for me, has been in sifting the stories. For truth and release. For awakening compassion. For reframing and clarification of sticking points.

I have found the gift of healthy "Grandmother energy" to be empowering for forward momentum, and the process of freeing ourselves from generational pain and patterns.

We can do this without throwing the stories and hard truths and mistakes out, but with the help of what’s been learned and true in spite of them - in order to take one step at a time into a new realization and relationship with the thread that weaves us all together through time: Love.

It’s a process. And I’m in-process, too. Always will be… but with {Creative} Spirit by my side, I am here for the sifting, medicine-making and actions that come straight from healing and love.

Have you felt a call to the story-sifting, generational-healing creative work of our times, too?

Grandmothers’ Medicine is a 13 page guided PDF, with 4 art journaling demo videos, an 18 minute introduction audio, and reflective journaling prompts to help you sift and connect with the Grandmother energy in your family line or lived experience.

It would make a meaningful accompaniment to any other visible/visual ways you explore and express your invisible or living connection to the generations that have come before you.
